Busy Mom Life: Practice Self-Care

May 22, 2018

Most of the time talking about this topic deserves the response, “easier said than done.” Still, it is important. Taking care of yourself is important, especially when so much of your time is spent taking care of everything except yourself. Let’s talk about self-care for busy moms.

Between being a wife, mom, PhD student, employee, and blogger, I find it extremely difficult to schedule any time for myself.

My schedule is the one that must be flexible. I have to take everyone else’s schedule into consideration when planning my schedule.

My husband owns a moving company, so it is not possible for him to tell his customers that he can’t complete their house move today because the kids are sick or because Nanny has a doctor appointment or because Honey has a client. I must be ready for anything.

While I love the role of mommy and being the one to do things with/for my kids, it often means my plans must change…. even if my plans were only to go to the grocery store without kids. All moms out there know going to the grocery without your kids is totally different than going with them. Self-care for busy moms isn’t always easy.

Making time for yourself is important for your overall health.

Self-Care for Busy Moms

Self-care means doing things for yourself, whether that means “you” time or creating an environment that makes things less stressful.

Here are some ways I practice self-care as a busy mom:

1. Wake-up time

Our youngest has always been an early riser. For a while, I used him as my alarm clock. The problem with this was it meant jumping out of bed and getting straight to work on mom duties.

One day I decided I couldn’t do it anymore. Even though I am a morning person, it’s just too hard to jump out of bed and start my day running. So, I started waking up at least 30 minutes earlier than my kiddos. Best decision ever. I have time for me… time to put on makeup, time to drink tea, time to just be for a minute.

2. Gym

I’m the first to admit, I don’t have much time for the gym. I can’t go for hours and get every thing I want done. BUT, I can go for at least 30 minutes. So, I try to do this three days a week.

I know you know. Exercise is good for a person for so many reasons. At the very least, use it for some you time and to blow off some stress.

3. Hobby

A few years after the boys were born, I realized I wasn’t really sure who I was outside of a wife and a mother. I needed something that was just for me.

Find a hobby. This will look different for everyone. Me, I’ve always enjoyed writing, so I started a blog… and it turned into so much more!

4. Don’t be so hard on yourself

We just can’t be perfect all of the time. And that’s okay. Give yourself a break. So you didn’t get that pile of clean clothes folded today… it will be okay! (They will be there tomorrow!)

Take time from responsibilities to enjoy the moment with your family.

Take Care of Yourself, Mama

Taking care of yourself is important for anyone no matter what roles you play in life. My husband is more than supportive, but his schedule is totally different than mine. So, I am challenged to find ways to take care of myself during my own time. Right now, my goal is to become better at self-care.

I need to hear tips, advice, or whatever works for you.  Not the tips you can get from googling that sound nice but are…. easier said than done. Tell me what works for you! What are some other ways that myself and others can add self-care to their busy schedules? Let me know in the comments!

It’s hard sometimes because the kid don’t care LOL that you are tired. Even the teenagers –although they will ask if you are tired then make their request. Ha Ha.

Sometimes you have to disappear into the bathroom. You can get a few minutes of peace there.

I like the idea of using the bathroom as a safety zone 😎

This is a good reminder! I often end up running on empty if I am not careful.

Great post! I totally agree- you can’t take of anyone else if you don’t take care of yourself first!
